Abstract: The global crime rate is increasing on account of factors like poverty, illiteracy, unemployment,
population explosion etc. Crimes like murder, murder for gain, dacoity, burglary, rapes,
corruption etc. are rampant all around the world. India is one such country where the crime rate
is accelerating day by day. The present study an attempt has been analyzing major crimes in
Tiruchirappalli city for the year 2012 to 2017. Robbery had been recorded as the highest crime in
the city with 71.8%. Murder for gain and dacoity recorded as the lowest crimes in the city with
1.1%. Srirangam range had the highest crimes, which is 60% among all other ranges. This study
will help the police in preventing crimes in the city thereby helping in the decline of the crime
rate.
